Talking Points

Three quick news stories to help you start small talk conversations in English. Start your conversation with phrases like:

  • I read a story about …

  • Did you hear about … ?

  • Saw something interesting the other day. …

Ed Sheeran's Street Performance Interrupted

While performing on the street in India, singer Ed Sheeran was unplugged by local police.

The incident has sparked discussions about public performances and local regulations.

My take: I personally don’t like the inconvenience of dealing with street performances. I don’t like the noise, and I don’t like the crowds. I know I may be in the minority on this, but what’s your take?

Possible phrases for your response: I think/like, I don’t think/like, X bothers me, X doesn’t bother me, I’m (not) a fan of X, I couldn’t care less.

Kilauea Volcano Eruption

Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano has started erupting again.

Some visitors are excited to witness the eruption, while others are canceling trips due to safety concerns.

Talking points: Would you visit a place with an active volcano? How do natural events like this impact tourism and local economies?

Language tip: Use would to talk about doing something you’re only thinking about.

  • I wouldn’t visit an erupting volcano.

  • I would go to Hawaii, but I wouldn’t go near that volcano.

Plastic Straws Debate

Plastic straws have become a symbol of the global plastic waste crisis. Many governments and businesses have banned them to reduce pollution.

A certain government official in America has publicly supported keeping plastic straws. He claims paper alternatives “don’t work.” Apparently, using a paper straw is too difficult for him.

Talking points: It’s undeniable plastic straws are a detriment. And some people don’t like paper straws for a number of reasons. The question is, what are some better alternatives?

Language tip: Use comparative structures to what you think is better.

  • I think aluminum straws would be better than plastic.

  • Paper straws are not as bad for the environment as plastic.
